<B>1887-S $20 MS63 PCGS.</B></I> Like so many other San Francisco Mint double eagles, this date is an important condition rarity, common enough in lower grades that any collector can own an example, but elusive in better Mint State grades. Consider the total PCGS population that includes 181 circulated examples, another 348 pieces in grades from MS60 through MS62, but just 52 coins in MS63 or finer grades. This example is a remarkable piece with frosty yellow-gold luster and faint pinkish overtones. The devices are all sharply impressed on both sides. Also consider that the San Francisco Mint piece of this date is the only collectible double eagle issued during the year as the Philadelphia Mint only produced proofs.
