1887<S$1> PR64 PCGS. David Bowers (1993) indicates that most 1887 Proof dollars still exist, though most are in lower grades such as PR60 to PR63; many have also been cleaned. The Near-Gem Proof offered here features a thin veneer of gold-tan patination over the obverse, which yields to lighter tones on the reverse. The design elements are crisply struck, with excellent definition in the hair over Liberty's ear and on the eagle's breast feathers. A mild cameo effect is noted when the piece is tilted beneath a light source. the surfaces are impeccably preserved, revealing just a few minor handling marks. Population: 60 in 64, 43 finer (12/05).
