1887-O<S$1> MS65 PCGS. This is an attractive Gem with frosty silver luster and pale champagne toning. Although not fully struck, it is much sharper than usually seen. Some central weakness is evident on both sides, particularly over Liberty's ear. In his Red Book of Morgan Dollars, Dave Bowers discussed the strike of this and other O-Mint coins: "At the New Orleans Mint during this era many dies were spaced too far apart, perhaps facilitating the coining process, but resulting in pieces that hardly deserve numismatic prizes." Patience is recommended, waiting for just the right coin to come along. And for that patient collector, now is a perfect opportunity. While considered a common date in circulated and lower Mint State grades, few Gem quality survivors exist from the mintage of 11,550,000 coins. Most Mint State examples known today are from the 1962 to 1964 Treasury release, as well as a few bags distributed prior to that time.
