1887 G$1 PR66 PCGS. Except for the final-year 1889, the business strike gold dollars of the 1880s were produced in little more than souvenir quantities. The last business strike mintage that was more than lip service to the waning denomination came in 1874. As a result, many of the business strikes appear with prooflike surfaces, and they are sometimes quite difficult to distinguish from true proofs. In addition, the number of proof coins surged remarkably as the series neared its close. Those two factors combined tend to depress the prices of true proof coins from late in the series, but that era too appears to be coming to a close. This undeniable and superlative proof striking appears richly deserving of a Cameo designation, although the old-style PCGS green-label holder predates that era at PCGS. Rich gold-on-black contrast is noted on both sides, with brilliantly mirrored fields and thickly frosted devices. Both sides show deep, even, reddish patina. Evidence of contact is completely minimal and undistracting. Population: 9 in 66, 2 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
