1887 A.G. Spalding Signed "Spalding's Baseball Guide." What better home for an autograph from this early baseball pioneer than an early volume of his seminal baseball guide? His name now synonymous with sporting goods, Spalding is rarely remembered for the fine quality of his play--for example, he was the first pitcher to record 200 wins. But his motto, "Everything is possible to him who dares," drove him to even greater success as an executive and business man, serving from 1882 to 1891 as the president of the Chicago Nationals team, and organizing the first Baseball World Tour in 1888. A year before that tour, Spalding signed this copy of his Guide for a fan, a nice 8/10 fountain pen signature that appears beside a portrait of him to create a display piece (a Spalding signed "photo??") of which we wouldn't have dared to dream. The booklet itself shows an expected degree of wear, particularly to the cover, but the page containing the autograph will still present wonderfully. Given the placement of this exceptionally difficult signature, it could convincingly be argued as one of the most desirable of the few extant. LOA from PSA/DNA.
