1887/6 S$1 MS66 Prooflike PCGS. This overdate variety was created when the Engraving Department at the Philadelphia Mint partially resurfaced a few 1886-dated dies and punched a 7 over the 6. The variety was discovered by Ted Clark in November 1971, and, to date, enough Mint State coins have been confirmed to make the 1887/6 relatively easy to obtain in grades through the MS63 level. While Gems are rare, Prooflike coins are even rarer. Since such coins are created when working dies are polished, had those of the 1887/6 overdate been polished too much, the underdigit would have disappeared altogether. The present Gem, while possessed of shimmering, glassy fields beneath light silver-gray patina, still displays evidence of the underdigit to either side of the base of the 7. The devices are sharply defined, and the surfaces are remarkably free of coin-to-coin contact. A rare opportunity for the advanced Morgan Dollar specialist to acquire a truly rare example. Both major grading services report just two coins in MS66 Prooflike (both of which are at PCGS), and there are none finer (7/02).
