1887<5C> MS66 PCGS. Ex: Baxi. Traces of repunching can be seen on each of the first three date digits. This example, which is tied for the finest certified by PCGS, has fully brilliant and highly lustrous mint frost. The surfaces are light gray with a hint of champagne color. The strike is typical, with the upper obverse and lower reverse weakly defined, including stars 6 through 8 on the obverse, and the lower left branch of the wreath on the reverse. Throughout the series, several different repunched dates (and even overdates) have been reported, much like that on the present coin, but most are minor varieties that are only collected by the most advanced specialists in the series. While the date repunching on this example is certainly of interest to these specialists, the most likely audience for this coin will be among the Set Registry collectors who cannot acquire a higher grade piece, as none have been certified.
