<B>1887 5C MS66 NGC.</B></I> While the 15 million-plus mintage 1887 nickel is readily available in all grades, David Bowers (2006) indicates that quality can be a problem with high-grade coins: "Many Mint State coins have granular surfaces from dies that remained in service too long." This MS66 specimen does reveal minor granularity, especially at the reverse periphery. This does not, however, detract from the coin's pleasing eye appeal that results from warm gold and blue-gray patina resting on highly lustrous surfaces exhibiting sharply struck design elements. The only mentionable flaws are a couple of small spots at the D of UNITED.
