1887<$5> PR58 PCGS. This is a very rare proof coin which was likely spent by an owner who fell on hard times, and was recovered from circulation before the mirror surfaces were worn away. The strike is typical of a proof, with bold details on each tiny device, and no signs of weakness anywhere. Minor surface abrasions from circulation, typical of any gold coin which spent even the briefest time in the channels of commerce. This fate was not uncommon and it is likely that the vast majority of the 87 struck in proof ended up in circulation. In fact, PCGS and NGC have graded a few others as PR55 and a total of 3 as PR58. For the collector, this is a more affordable example of this issue, as a higher grade Choice or Gem Proof will undoubtedly bring multiples of what this coin will realize. Pleasing orange-gold color throughout, and still a very attractive coin. Population: 1 in 58, 7 finer (6/06).
From The Jackson Hole Collection.
