1887 $3 PR64 PCGS. In his The United States $3 Gold Pieces, David Bowers notes that 1887 proof three dollar coins (160 pieces minted): "... are among the more available in the context of the $3 series, but are rare on an absolute basis." Bowers estimates that 90 to 120 examples are extant.
The peach-gold surfaces of this PR64 example display a degree of field-motif contrast; indeed, both sides yield somewhat of a gold-on-black appearance. A well executed strike brought out sharp definition on the design features, except for softness on the bowknot. The left obverse field exhibits a grainy finish, which is common to this issue. Bowers calls this: "... an 'aura' or 'halo' of graininess in the obverse field, common to other proof threes of this era." Housed in a green-label holder. Population: 25 in 64, 19 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
