1887 $3 --Mint Error--Triple Struck, Reverse Rotated--P
1887 $3 Three Dollar--Mint Error--Triple Struck, Reverse Rotated--PR63 Cameo NGC. The third-from-last issue in the popular Indian Princess three dollar gold series had a checkered beginning. Proof coins from the issue are known in a variety of single- and double-strike orientations, per Q. David Bowers' The United States $3 Gold Pieces--1854-1889. The present coin, however, shows three strikings. On the obverse the first strike is rotated about a half-letter width counterclockwise from the subsequent final strike, so that a faint I is visible between NI of UNITED, and the Indian's profile shows parallel doubling that is most visible at the top front and bottom rear. If one turns the coin over using normal coin turn from obverse to reverse, a final strike is visible, correctly oriented--but underneath the final strike is a faint first strike, rotated about 190 degrees from the final reverse strike, or rotated from the obverse in about normal medal turn plus a few extra degrees of clockwise rotation.
One can form one's own conjectures about how this incredibly rare coin--an obvious first cousin to other known errors of this issue--were formed. Suffice it to say that this is a likely unique error, and as a proof error three dollar gold piece it is certainly among the rarest of the rare. Otherwise the surfaces show a few light contact marks, chiefly in the left fields on each side, that account for the grade. The yellow-gold surfaces are nonetheless brilliant and quite attractive.
From The Pacific Coast Mint Error Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
