1887 $3 MS65 PCGS. This lovely Gem displays intense mint frost and beautiful, light honey-gold coloration over both sides. The design elements are crisply struck, and only the ribbon bow on the lower reverse reveals typical minor weakness. The surfaces are well preserved and only a couple of slight marks are noticeable on the reverse, while the obverse is essentially blemish-free. Many of the survivors exhibit doubling on RICA. This piece shows bold doubling there, and on IBERTY; the two lowest ribbon ends on the reverse also show clear doubling. The 1887 three dollar gold issue had a business strike mintage of 6,000 pieces, but most of those coins were apparently melted without ever being released into circulation, leaving this date scarcer than expected, especially at the finer Mint State grade levels such as this. Population: 23 in 65, 10 finer (6/07).
From The DAX Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
