<B>1887 $3 MS64 PCGS.</B></I> The official mintage of the 1887 three dollar was 6,000 pieces. That figure sounds substantial enough when compared to other mintages from this series; however, according to Samuel Chapman: "Of the later years of the $3, large numbers were remelted at the Philadelphia Mint." The 1887 does not appear to have been a hoarded date, and high grade survivors seem to be from coins that were randomly set aside in the year of issue. This particular example has the usual bright reflectivity in the fields and orange-gold color, but the obverse shows haziness. Well struck, there are no obvious or detracting marks on either side.
