1887 25C PR67 Cameo NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Briggs 2-B. The Mint required only two die sets of dies for the 1887 Seated Quarter: Briggs 1-A delivered 10,000 business strikes and Briggs 2-B was responsible for the 710 proofs. With such a low total mintage, it is little wonder that the 1887 is among the most eminently collectible dates at the end of the Seated Quarter series. While enough proofs survive to satisfy less discerning collectors, the advanced numismatist would be wise to jump at the opportunity to acquire a Superb Gem. With a Cameo designation, the 1887 is represented by only six coins at NGC and PCGS, and the present example is the finest in that select group (7/02). Delicate golden iridescence overlays both sides of this expertly preserved specimen. The strike is razor sharp throughout, and obverse star centrils 8-13, which are often indistinct, display emerging, if not full definition. The reverse eagle and shield exhibit signs of overpolishing--a feature that should come as no surprise since Briggs (1991) states that this die was rusted at the time of striking. The richly frosted devices and deep, watery fields combine to produce memorable cameo contrast. From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
