1887 1C MS66 Red PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. With a mintage of 45,223, 523 business strikes, the 1887 cent is relatively plentiful. David Bowers, in his Flying Eagle and Indian Cents reference book, says that while Red Mint State coins are available, "spotting is a problem." He also mentions the date is "sometimes seen softly struck from worn dies, thus giving a granular appearance to the fields ... ."
This Premium Gem specimen displays pleasing luster and copper-gold color imbued with hints of light green and yellow-gold. The fields are smooth, and the design elements are well impressed, exhibiting sharp definition on the diamonds and all of the reverse elements. Only the feather tips show the usual softness. We note a few tiny flecks, but these are inoffensive. Housed in a green-label holder. Population: 13 in 66 Red, 2 finer (7/07).
From The Santa Fe Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
