<B>1887 $10 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS.</B></I> The year 1887 was one in which the nation's mints were engaged, if at all, chiefly in the business of producing huge amounts of minor coinage and Morgan dollars. Regarding the 1887 eagle, the Breen proof <I>Encyclopedia</B></I> diagnoses the following characteristics: "Date slants up, 7 much farther from border than 1, left base of 1 about over left edge of a dentil ; four stripes thin, feathers attenuated below second. (On business strikes date is centered and level.)" Those diagnostics are especially important, as counterfeits of this issue have been produced by removing the mintmark from 1887-S coins. While the 1887 proof mintage was a minuscule 87 coins (in gold proof sets), 53,600 business strikes were produced. The 1887-S business strike emission was a generous 817,000 pieces. The 1887 eagle's siblings, the half eagle and double eagle, were produced only in proof format, and both are popular rarities in their respective series. The Garrett-Guth gold <I>Encyclopedia</B></I> notes that while the eagle mintage was the highest since proof eagles were first offered to the public in 1859, the issue is still quite rare and desirable, with about 30 specimens known today.<BR> The present amazing PR66 Deep Cameo specimen clearly shows the proof diagnostics as Breen enumerates above. The fields are remarkably deep in their reflectivity with a thick overlay of mint frost over the devices. By way of identification, there are two planchet flakes out of the obverse field. One is tiny and located between the hair curls at the back of Liberty's neck and star 12. The other is noticeably larger, but still shallow, and placed directly in front of the coronet. This example is the finest graded and only PR66 of the issue at PCGS, while there are three PR66 coins certified at NGC, one Ultra Cameo and two Cameos (10/06).<BR><I>Illustrated in </B></I> Proof Gold Coinage of the United States<I> by Robert J.
