With 53,680 pieces minted, the 1887 Philadelphia mint emission is much scarcer than the common 1887-S. On the East Coast of the United States at this period, there was a battle going on between the forces of inflation (paper money, reduced value silver coins) and those who favored gold. The upshot of this was a continual draining of gold from the U.S. Treasury throughout the 1880s and well into the 1890s, that finally reached crisis proporations in 1894-6. This supplies one reason why mintage dropped so dramatically in the 1880s at this mint. Mint States of 1887 are therefore few and far between. Lustrous, though with average bagmarks marring the frost, though few of these mar the cheek. (#8710)
