1886-S S$1 MS67 PCGS.
1886-S S$1 MS67 PCGS.<p>Ex: Jack Lee, PCGS Tour. Although scarce (in the context of the Morgan Dollar series) in Mint State, the 1886-S is somewhat of a nondescript issue in grades up to and including the MS64 level of preservation. Only at the Gem level does this issue begin to show its rarity, and Superb Gems are the province of advanced specialists. This lovely and interestingly toned representative shares the MS67 level with only three other coins at PCGS and a solitary NGC specimen. There are no coins certified finer by either major grading service (10/01). As befits the issue, this coin is well struck with no areas of bothersome incompleteness of detail. The luster is truly amazing, being full and frosty with a scintillating cartwheel sheen. As important as the luster and striking quality are, perhaps the most impressive feature of this coin is the wholly original toning. The obverse is overlaid in faint swirls of golden-tan iridescence that appear to drift toward the border. The reverse is much more extensively toned in gold, electric-blue, and lilac shades with a "box" of champagne-russet patina in the center. A coin that really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. From the Mike Casper Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
