“Scarcest in Decade” 1886-S Morgan Silver Dollar Its very limited 750,000 circulation mintage was by far the lowest for San Francisco Mint Morgans in the first ten years of the series. Other S-mintmark Morgan issues of the time were up to 17 times as plentiful. And vastly more 1886 Philadelphia and New Orleans issues also survive today, so the 1886-S is very much the key scarcity for the date. It’s estimated that as few as 55,000 may exist in our nicely detailed Very Finequality or better. “Key Scarcity of Date” 1887-S Morgan Silver Dollar Its 1.8 million San Francisco mintage was far and away the lowest for the date (11 million were struck at New Orleans and 20 million atPhiladelphia). Today Very Fine or better circulated specimens (as few as 25,000 may exist) are even tougher to find than mint-state quality.
