1886-O Morgan $1
1886-O Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Housed in an Old Green Holder. A nice white coin with a better than average strike. The bright and frosty coin offered here represents one of the most desirable MS64 certified 1886-O dollars. And it is to be expected with such an imposing condition rarity, the population figures are consistent with its avowed exclusivity in choice grade. The landmark offering of the present example may be one of the few appearances of this rare issue in 2011.

This date should be common but it is not. The mintage was over 10 million coins, which makes it hard to believe more don't exist in Mint State grades. After all, the 1881-S issue had comparable mintage, yet well over a million examples of that date are known in Mint State grades (due to the immense hoard found in the Continental Bank vaults in 1984). David Bowers speculates in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States (1993): "At or near the time of striking in the nineteenth century, probably a few million coins, say two to four million, were placed into circulation and saw commercial use. Probably, millions of other coins, perhaps as many as six to eight million pieces, went to the melting pot under the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act." Recent grading statistics prove that in MS64 grade it is difficult to locate. In MS65 preservation the 1886-O happens to be the rarest New Orleans Mint Morgan dollar! The dramatic difference in the number of survivors between MS64 and MS65 is reflected in various auction results and price guides. We expect this fine example will bring near-record bidding from astute purchasers. Pop 213; 6 finer, 3 in 64+, 2 in 65, 1 in 65+ (PCGS # 7168) .
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.
