<B>1886 G$1 PR62 Ultra Cameo NGC.</B></I> Beginning gold proof collectors often wonder why the 1884 to 1889 proof gold dollars are much rarer than their mintages suggest. For example, the 1886 has a proof production of 1,016 pieces. Yet NGC has certified 84 examples (as of 6/07), which undoubtedly includes numerous resubmissions over the past 20 years. Probably, many proofs were purchased with intent to alter into jewelry or love tokens. The present lot is well struck aside from the CA in AMERICA. Thin marks on the cheek and in front of the mouth determine the grade.
