1886 5C MS65 PCGS. Although considerably behind the 1885, the 1886 business strike Liberty nickel has also begun to emerge in recent years as a significant and conditionally rare coin in higher Mint State grades. Both pieces owe their scarcity to the low mintages, 1.5 million pieces of the 1885 and 3.3 million of the 1886.
Interestingly, in MS65 and MS66 PCGS has certified more pieces of the 1885, 42/16 for the '85 compared with 30/3 for the '86. This piece offers lustrous, silvery surfaces with just a faint blush of gold. The lower left portion of the reverse wreath is softly struck, and there are no mentionable impairments save for a few faint field hairlines.

Coin Engraver: Charles E.
