1886 $20 --Altered Surface--NCS. Proof. The 1886 is the stopper to a date set of Liberty double eagles. For whatever reason, San Francisco neglected to strike 1886-S twenties, the only such omission by the Mint between 1854 and 1911. Only the Philadelphia Mint coined the denomination in 1886, but just 1,000 business strikes and 106 proofs were issued. Among these proofs, many are impaired or no longer exist. NGC has certified just 20 pieces across all grades, some of which are presumably resubmissions.
This razor-sharp specimen has noticeable cameo frost. Study beneath a lens indicates a few light hairlines. A subtle color change on the field, between gold and faint mauve, occurs near the eagle, arrowheads, neck curls, and obverse stars 4 to 6. This color change may have triggered the Altered Surface designation, although its impact is best measured through personal inspection, which is recommended. It is certain the piece would be a highlight of many advanced collections.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
