1886 $20 AU55 NGC.<p>The 1886 is even more difficult than the 1881 and 1885 Double Eagles in terms of overall rarity. In higher grades (in this case, AU50 and above), the 1882 is marginally rarer. There are actually as many as four or five Uncirculated pieces known from an original mintage figure of 1,000. An estimated 25-30 pieces exist in all grades. The piece in our Long Beach 2001 sale "only" graded VF35, while the best we have auctioned was an MS61, which brought $35,075 in our March 1998 Spring ANA Sale. Rich coppery-golden color is draped over the surfaces. The fields still retain most of their original prooflike reflectivity in spite of numerous small abrasions that are scattered over each side. The most obvious abrasions to note for pedigree purposes are a mark to the left of the point of the bust and another near the rim between stars 3 and 4. Fully struck throughout. The final price realized for this coin will likely be around the same as a 1907 High Relief Double Eagle in MS63-64. When one considers that there are thousands of High Reliefs known and just two or three dozen 1886 Double Eagles, the latter seems like a very underpriced issue indeed. These rare circulation strikes from the 1880s (as well as the 1891) are, in our opinion, simply fantastic values at today's price levels. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
