1886, $2 Silver Certificate FR242 CGA 68
The second issue of Silver Certificates consisted of notes from 1 to 1,000 Dollars of the series of 1886, 1891 and 1908. The notes of the 1886 series are extremely popular with collectors because of the attractive reverses which are entirely covered with fine, detailed lathe work. On the $2 denomination, we see a head of General Winfield Scott Hancock, Union general during the Civil War.

Born in Montgomery Square, Pennsylvania, February 14, 1824, and although named for America's top military hero of the day, Winfield Scott Hancock was not originally intended for a military career. Following the Confederacy's collapse Hancock came into conflict with Grant who objected to his lenient treatment of the South. He was mustered out of the volunteer service on July 26, 1866, the same day that he received the appointment of major general in the regular establishment. He died in 1886 at Governors Island while still in command of the Department of the East, as it was known in those post-war days.

This is an especially resplendent beauty and a gem by any standards. An engaging display of lively green ink leaps across the highly intricate back design of this scarce $2 denomination. The centering is strong for the type, with full margins both top and bottom as well as at the sides.
