<B>1886 $2 1/2 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS.</B></I> The 1886 quarter eagle is quite scarce in proof format. Only 88 pieces were minted, and Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in their <I>Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933</B></I>, estimate "... perhaps 30 to 40 examples known in all grades." PCGS and NGC have given the Deep Cameo classification to 21 specimens.<BR> The Gem Deep Cameo in this lot projects a stunning gold-on-black appearance, and the design elements are exquisitely impressed, befitting a proof striking. Close scrutiny with a loupe reveals no mentionable marks. A barely discernible as-made tiny planchet flake above the upper berry in the wreath, and another below the R in AMERICA might help to pedigree the coin.
