1886 1C Type Two MS65 Red NGC
1886 1C Type Two MS65 Red NGC. The Mint introduced yet another new hub to the Indian Cent series in 1886. The obverse portrait is proportioned differently and rotated slightly clockwise in relation to that on the Type One hub. The most significant change, however, is the position of the final feather in Liberty's headdress to the letters in AMERICA. On Type One examples, that feather points between the IC in AMERICA, while on Type Two examples it points between the CA. Writing in 1992, Snow relates that many Mint State 1886 Type Two cents are extant from an original roll. Most of these coins are softly struck from worn dies. One should not overlook the fact, however, that the Type Two is significantly scarcer than its similarly dated Type One counterpart. The present Gem is one of only 15 pieces graded MS65 Red by NGC and PCGS combined, and there are just two coins finer (10/07). Both sides are a little softly defined, but, while the dies do appear to have been worn at the time of striking, we do not know whether or not this coin was once included in the aforementioned roll. A few swirls of subdued color are seen on the obverse, but fulsome orange-red luster dominates the outward appearance. Clearly, this is a coin that represents a fleeting opportunity for the advanced collector.

Coin Engraver: James B.
