1886<1C> Type One MS64 Red and Brown NGC. A major hub change took place in 1886, and examples are known as either Type One or Type Two. The former have the lowest headdress feather pointing between IC in AMERICA, while the latter have the lowest feather pointing between CA. In all grades and formats, business strike and proof, Type One examples are more plentiful than Type Two. Collecting interest for these two major design types is extremely high. Discovery of the two different types is attributed to collector James Reynolds of Flint, Michigan, whose article about them appeared in the Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine issue of June 1949 (per Dave Bowers) or August 1954 (per Walter Breen). Rick Snow suggested that this collector was from Tucson, Arizona. The surfaces are about 25% mint red with golden-brown toning in the remaining area. Pale blue, violet, and sea green iridescent highlights can be seen on both the obverse and reverse. Envelope Included.
