1886 $1 MS68 NGC. In PCGS’s The Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection they state that “Morgan dollars were usually transported in bags; thus most have marks and other surface impairments.” Superb Gem Uncirculated Morgan dollars are scarce to rare depending on the date. For instance, of the 1,753,661 Morgan dollars graded by PCGS, only 349 are MS68 and 10 are MS69. Of those graded MS68, only nine come from the Philadelphia Mint. Similar figures are found in the NGC Census Report. Most MS68s are from the Carson City Mint and San Francisco Mint. The Philadelphia Mint count shows only six years--all in the 1880s--with examples graded at MS68. This 1886 falls into that category. The popularity of high quality silver dollars seems unabated; therefore, this offering represents a rare opportunity to own a Superb Morgan that is needed to build a winning registry set.
The surfaces of this piece are virtually perfect, as one would expect. The mint luster is silky-smooth and the only hint of toning is around the margins. Fully struck as well. NGC Census: 8 in 68, 0 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: George T.
