1885-S $5 MS67 NGC. For the numismatic student, the opportunity to examine such a high grade example of this or any issue is a treat. The luster is thick and rich in the fields, and close examination will find only the faintest signs of handling. The strike is fairly sharp, with just a couple of obverse stars not quite full to their very centers, but the central devices of Liberty and the eagle have complete definition. Walter Breen described two different obverse types for this issue, which he called Open 5 and Closed 5 depending on whether the knob of the 5 touches the cusp or is free of it. This example has a short line that actually joins these two parts of this digit. The date is not sunk as deeply in the die as the stars or bust, yet we don't believe the Open 5 characteristic is due to a light impression of the logotype. It actually appears to be a different logotype punch. The reverse appears to be from a perfect die and this is probably a very early representative from that die. Slight doubling among the letters of UNITED is a result of the strike. This is an outstanding example with bright, coruscant luster. Both sides are lightly patinated and fully original. This is tied with two others at NGC as the finest example thus far certified (1/05). Truly a connoisseur's dream. Lot:7873
