1885-S<$20> MS64 NGC. Once the Carson City Mint ceased production early in 1885, the burden of gold production was concentrated on the San Francisco Mint. Philadelphia struck small quantities of proofs, but consequential business strike of gold coins did not again take place at the facility until 1888. Even San Francisco struck fewer double eagles than in prior years. Just 683,500 pieces were issued, and none were struck the following year. Uncirculated pieces are plentiful, however, until the MS63 level, at which point the 1885-S becomes scarce. Near-Gems are very rare, since indifferent storage abraded most examples. The present lustrous piece is only lightly abraded, without the usually encountered shiny cheek and scuffy fields. Census: 10 in 64, 0 finer (8/06).
