1885-S 10C MS65 PCGS. A landmark opportunity for Seate 1885-S[10C] MS65 PCGS.
1885-S<10C> MS65 PCGS. A landmark opportunity for Seated dime specialists, the 1885-S is seldom offered in any grade, due to its skimpy mintage of only 43,690 examples. Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins comments of this date, "Large boldface S. Mintmark as on [1884-S]. Usually in low grades, planchets often rough; Ex. rare UNC." Breen's comments are borne out by a search of our online auction archives, which reveal that we have never sold a Gem specimen of this issue at auction. Our auction records for other companies, in fact, show only one auction sale of a Gem specimen in the last 10 years (5/96, Bowers and Merena).
As further testament to this issue's incredible rarity, the PCGS online Population Report shows only seven examples of this coin graded in all Mint State grades. This and another coin are tied for the finest example at PCGS, save for one coin in MS66. NGC has graded 14 Mint State examples of the 1885-S, including four in MS65 and one in MS66. To summarize, this issue has seen 21 total Mint State examples at both services, of which there are six MS65 coins and two in MS66 (4/06). This puts the few certified Mint State examples squarely in the R.6 "Very Rare" category.
This coin shows delectable, even, original apricot-gold and ice-blue toning on both sides. As Breen notes, the mintmark is bold, and it is partially filled in the middle stroke. It is considerably closer to the right (facing) ribbon than the left, as on all genuine specimens. The strike on both sides is crisp and without flaw, showing a crisp impression on Liberty's head, gown clasp, drapery, and the shield. On the reverse, the wreath is extremely bold and shows no mentionable weakness. In fact, this coin's eye appeal is so incredible that it appears to be quite high-end for the grade.
Opportunities to acquire Seated Liberty coinage a
