1885-CC $20 XF40 NGC. Douglas Winter (2001) contends that the 1885-CC twenty dollar, with a mintage of 9,450 pieces, is the rarest Carson City double eagle from the 1880s, both in terms of overall and high-grade rarity. Yellow-gold surfaces display somewhat prooflike fields that yield pleasing contrast with the devices, especially when the coin is tilted under a light source. Better-than-average definition occurs on the design features, though the first couple of stars reveal the usual softness. With respect to abrasions, Winter writes that "Nearly every known 1885-CC double eagle shows excessive bagmarks on the surfaces." The marks occurring on the present example are certainly not "excessive" for the grade, nor are any worthy of special mention.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
