1885-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. The 1885-CC mintage figure of 9,450 pieces is considerably lower than for any other Carson City double eagles produced during the 1880s. Douglas Winter, in his Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint, says "It is the rarest Carson City double eagle from this decade, both in terms of overall and high grade rarity." Just about 40 Mint State examples have been certified by PCGS and NGC, with all but one in MS60 to MS62. That one is MS63.
Apricot-gold surfaces show hints of light tan, and possess soft luster. A well executed strike sharpens the design elements, including those on the peripheries that are often weak. A few minute marks and luster grazes are scattered about, much less so than typically seen on this heavily abraded date. Population: 12 in 62, 1 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
