1885-CC $20 Liberty PCGS AU53
1885-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. Low mintage of 9,450. Well struck, this has ample remaining mint luster throughout the protected areas on both sides. An attractive specimen to say the least! There is a reason for the reduced mintage of $20 gold from Carson City in 1885. Having galloped along in high fashion for several years in the late-1870s and early 1880s, the Mint met its match in the arrival of the Democrat, Grover Cleveland, who won the 1884 Presidential election. After Cleveland's was inaugurated in early 1885, he directed that the U.S. Treasury department stop funding the mint in Carson, Nevada as being an expense the budget-minded Cleveland thought was excessive in a time of frugality. Double eagle production had barely commenced when word came down to fire the Mint's staff and shutter the building. From then until 1889 (when Cleveland was replaced by a friendlier administration), only a skeleton crew remained behind to dust and oil the equipment at Carson City, while awaiting more propitious days (PCGS # 9004) .
