1885-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Due to the death of Mint Superintendent James Crawford on March 8, Carson City produced only silver dollars and double eagles, both with low mintages, before curtailing operations for the rest of 1885. The double eagle mintage was a mere 9,450 coins, and Rusty Goe, author of The Mint on Carson Street, estimates that only 40 to 50 pieces exist today in AU condition.
For an AU coin, the typically numerous surface blemishes are unusually superficial, especially on the obverse. There are noticeable hairlines in the obverse fields, but the luster remains quite vigorous for the assigned grade. A conditionally scarce offering from an issue that becomes downright rare and prohibitively expensive in Mint State. Census: 53 in 58, 13 finer (6/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
