1885-CC $20 AU58 NGC. A scarce date among double eagle
1885-CC<$20> AU58 NGC. A scarce date among double eagles from the Carson City Mint, surviving from a mintage of just 9,450 coins. Examples are elusive in any and all grades. Dave Bowers recently called this "a key issue in everlastingly strong demand." This particular example is finer than most that have appeared for sale in recent years. Douglas Winter and Michael Fuljenz, who co-authored a reference on Type III double eagles, discussed the population of this issue: "A number of small hoards entered the market in the past few years [1990s]. The majority of the pieces contained in the groups were marginal quality Extremely Fine and About Uncirculateds with heavily bagmarked surfaces and limited visual appeal." This example appears to be an exception to that statement. Fully lustrous with deep yellow-gold color accented by splashes of rose toning near the devices, especially on the obverse. Only a slight break in the luster on Liberty's cheek keeps this from a full Mint State grade. The surfaces have light abrasions as expected. This example is reasonably well struck, although not fully defined, and is typical of most examples of this issue in that regard.
From The Wyoming Collection.
