1885-CC $1 MS67 NGC. Ex: Great Falls Collection. There is little doubt that the brief history of the Carson City Mint has gained the attention and desire of a large number of collectors and numismatists. The Mint only operated from 1870 to 1893, with these operations shutdown during 1886, 1887, and 1888. Thus the entire history of this Mint spanned just 21 years of operation. By comparison with most other branch mints, the number of coins struck in Carson City was small. Just 56 million coins were minted in Nevada during the entire history of the Mint. Only Charlotte and Dahlonega produced smaller total quantities (less than 2 million coins each over a period of 24 years at those facilities).
This piece is clearly assigned the special S designation by NGC for its special obverse color. Few of the surviving examples of this issue have any appreciable amount of toning as most were stored in Mint bags at the Treasury for nearly a century. Only those pieces that were in contact with the physical cloth of the bags became toned, and then only on one side, quite often the obverse. Not only is this example such a coin with rainbow toning on the obverse, but it is also a Superb specimen with pristine surfaces. The obverse exhibits remarkable intermingled gold, russet, lilac, and green color while the reverse is fully brilliant. It is a sharply struck piece with virtually full details on both sides. The combination of all these qualities is rarely equaled. In fact, NGC has only graded two coins in MS67 S and none finer with a S designation. Five coins have been certified as MS68, all without the S modifier (7/07).

Coin Engraver: George T.
