1885 50C MS65 PCGS. The beginning collector armed with only a copy of the Guide Book might be tempted to classify the 1885 as a rare coin. After all, federal records indicate that only 6,130 pieces were produced in both business strike and proof formats. What the Guide Book will not tell one is that many business strikes were preserved at the time of issue with the result that Mint State coins are probably more plentiful than circulated survivors in today's hobby. Among the former, however, Gems are seldom seen, and few 1885 Halves of any grade can match the awe-inspiring appearance of the present example. The obverse is target toned in vibrant champagne, gold, cobalt-blue, and reddish-gray shades. The reverse is equally as attractive with an apricot-gray center and halos of golden-blue colors at the denticles. Both sides are essentially full in striking definition with thick, rich, frosty textured luster. A few trivial luster grazes on the obverse are well concealed by the toning. Worthy of a premium bid. Population: 9 in 65, there are just three finer (10/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
