This glittering 1885 Liberty half eagle, a cameo frosted beauty, takes its place at the Master of Ceremony's table among roster of surviving choice Proof gold coins in the present century. The devices are very crisp and are, for that matter, very frosty, accenting the portrait, eagle, and other features against a field of "orange peel" mirror beauty, characteristic of gold of this period. We don't know why, but for some reason the orange-peel effect is not as prevalent on the copper or silver Proofs.
Only 66 Proofs were reported struck in 1885, probably fewer than half this number exist today. That being the case, only a handful could possibly hold a candle to this lovely Proof 63 with its cameo-jewel devices. NGC Pop: 3, with 14 higher (12/05).
