1885<$3> MS64 PCGS. This is a key-date in the complete series of three dollar gold coins, with a mintage of under 1,000 coins. The Guide Book reports 801 business strikes and 109 proofs, for a total of 910 coins. Most business strikes that have survived over many years remain in relatively high grade today, including quite a number of Mint State examples, although the finest Smithsonian coin grades just AU58. That Institution has one other piece, an XF with a hole. This example shows minute recutting inside the upper and lower curves of the large 3 on the reverse. Similar characteristics were described by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins) as distinguishing features of proof pieces, although we do not feel that this example qualifies as a proof. Population: 29 in 64, 16 finer (9/06).
