1885 $20 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. This is one of the most important gold offerings in this sale, a distinction that an 1885 Double Eagle would hold in any auction. Excepting the proof-only 1883, 1884, and 1887, the 1885 boasts the lowest mintage in the regular issue Liberty Twenty Dollar series after only the 1882. Business strike Double Eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint amounted to just 751 pieces in 1885, and just 77 proofs were delivered during the same year. The fame of this issue is such that extant proofs are sought not only by collectors who appreciate their own inherent rarity, but also by those assembling high quality date sets of 19th U.S. gold. Writing in 1999, Mike Fuljenz and Doug Winter (Type Three Double Eagles: 1877-1907) estimate that only 12-15 proof 1885 Twenties are extant. We have been able to confirm the recent auction sales of only four certified representatives: 1. Ex: Atlanta ANA Signature Sale (Heritage, 8/2001), lot 8201, where it realized $13,800. A slightly impaired example, this coin was graded PR58 by NGC. 2. Ex: Chicago Sale (Superior, 8/1991), lot 823, where it realized $39,600. Certified PR64 by PCGS. 3. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 1895, where it realized $75,900. A PR65 PCGS specimen. 4. Ex: Portland ANA Signature Sale (Heritage, 8/1998), lot 7919, where it realized $103,500. This coin was graded PR66 by NGC.The present representative is a distinct example that is identifiable (for pedigree purposes) by an as struck planchet flaw on the reverse over and around the top of the I in UNITED. The surfaces are mostly smooth and possessed of only a few trivial, scattered hairlines that are all that seem to rule out an even higher grade. The eye appeal, which is already noteworthy, is further enhanced by an awe-inspiring cameo finish. Both sides are orange-gold in color with full, frosty textured devices set atop mirrored reflectivity in the fields. There are only two Deep Cameo proof 1885 Double Eagles known to PCGS--the present example and a PR66 specimen (10/02).
