1885 $20 MS62 NGC.
1885 $20 MS62 NGC.<p>There are four ultra-low mintage Philadelphia Double Eagles from the 1880s that were issued in both circulation strike and proof format: the 1881, 1882, 1885, and 1886. The 1885 is the most obtainable of these but still very rare in all grades. Only 751 pieces were issued for circulation and an estimated three dozen are known today. Most are in the XF40 to AU50 grade range, although there are a few more relatively high grade 1885 Double Eagles known than with the other dates mentioned above. A few nice Uncirculated coins exist including a PCGS MS63 that brought $39,100 in the Bass II Sale; another MS63 (this one graded by NGC) realized $27,600 as a "raw" coin in the Stack's October 1999 sale; and a third MS63, this one graded by PCGS, resides in a prominent Midwestern collection. The presently offered NGC MS62 is a Condition Census example and one of the highlights of the Eagle Collection. Fully struck with bright prooflike fields, the surfaces show the usual overlay of light coppery-gold color common to this issue. This is one of the finest examples we have seen. The coin can be distinguished in the future by the presence of a short grease stain (as struck) by star 5. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
