1885 $20 AU58 PCGS.
1885 $20 AU58 PCGS. With only 751 business strikes produced, the 1885 has the second lowest mintage figure of any Type Three double eagle, second only to the 1882. Only 45-55 pieces are known today. For some reason, even though most of the survivors are AU or Mint State, this was an issue that was handled roughly and most of the pieces known are heavily abraded. The fields are bright and prooflike, as always seen, without the crinkly "orange peel" texture found on proofs of this date and many gold proofs of this era. To further distinguish this piece from an impaired proof, note the notch in the truncation of Liberty's neck just left of the 5 in the date, the date is also a bit lower in the exergual area than on a proof, and the left line of the sixth pale gule on the reverse is thin. Sharply struck throughout, again as always seen, the short life of the dies used never had a chance to wear down and the highpoint detail is crisp on each side. The lovely orange-gold surfaces show a light but noticeable accent of reddish patina on both obverse and reverse, and close examination reveals there are faint traces of lilac intermixed also. The surfaces are densely populated with small abrasions; however, the only noticeable or mentionable ones that could be used for pedigree purposes are a couple of shallow vertical marks below Liberty's eye. Because of the above average appearance of this coin's surfaces it might be considered a lower Condition Census piece for this date. Population: 5 in 58, 5 finer (10/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
