1885 $2 1/2 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. Quarter Eagle p
1885<$2 1/2> PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. Quarter Eagle production was confined to the Philadelphia Mint in 1885, and a meager 887 pieces were produced. Only 87 of these coins were proofs, and survivors are obviously in demand due to the scarcity of high quality business strikes. Needless to say, this proof issue is rare in its own right, and we believe that no more than half of the original mintage is extant. A few of these coins are impaired, and still others are noticeably hairlined. Pleasingly original and obviously well preserved since the time of issue, the present example is deeply colored in reddish-orange shades. The fields are deeply mirrored and exhibit the typical "orange peel" texture so often seen on proofs of this era, these contrasting nicely against the heavily frosted devices the surfaces do not reveal any bothersome contact marks. An accurately graded Gem. Population: 2 in 65 Deep Cameo, 1 finer (4/05).
