1885<$2 1/2> AU53 NGC. It is a very unusual and pleasant opportunity to be able to offer one of the rarest Liberty Quarter Eagles in the entire series. The 1885 has the fourth lowest business strike mintage--800 pieces--of any Liberty Quarter Eagle coin, next to the 1881, the 1875, and the prohibitively rare 1854-S. One theory for the exceedingly low business strike production is that even as late as the 1880s, individuals could come personally and bring their gold to the mint for conversion into coin of the realm. There was a glut of gold coins, particularly in the East, and no production had been specified. Maybe these precious few coins were produced from direct public demand. From this tiny mintage, a total of 99 pieces have been certified by both services in all grades, undoubtedly, some of which are certainly resubmissions. AUs seem to be the median grade for the date, and this specimen hits right in the middle. The strike is sharp and the surfaces still show some prooflike reflectivity. This is truly an opportunity for the astute gold buyer, as this is an exceptional coin that is rarely offered for sale.
