1884-S S$1 MS64 NGC. The 1884-S is among the most renowned S-mint issues in the Morgan dollar series in terms of difficulty. In MS64 grade, perhaps only the 1893-S would be generally considered a higher-priced S-mint coin. The 2007 Guide Book gives retail prices for the 1893-S at $300,000 in MS64, with the MS64 1884-S at $120,000 and a similarly graded 1892-S at $90,000. Wholesale prices reflect a similar structure, as the April 6 Coin Dealer Newsletter gives a wholesale amount of $180,000 for the 1893-S in MS64, with the 1884-S at $77,500 and the 1892-S in MS64 at $75,000. Finally, Coin World's Coin Values publication prices the MS64 1893-S at $250,000, the 1884-S at $125,000, and the 1892-S at $100,000. The point of this is that while the 1884-S has traditionally been grouped with other condition rarities such as the 1886-O, 1896-O, and 1901 Morgan issues, it is perhaps time, at least in higher Mint State grades, to consider it in the same class with the more famous 1893-S and 1892-S dollars.
This piece offers satiny surfaces that are brilliant and lustrous, with a hint of silver-gold patina over basically untoned surfaces. The strike is unassailably sharp. Liberty's cheek is exceptionally clean, with only a couple of tiny milling marks scattered about. Some extremely faint horizontal hairlines on Liberty's lower cheek and neck are likely the only reason this coin did not achieve an even finer grade, and as it stands, it is extremely high-end for an MS64 coin. Only five times previously have we had the privilege to offer an 1884-S Morgan silver dollar in MS64, and never have we offered one in a finer grade. NGC has certified 15 coins in MS64, with three finer, while PCGS has certified 13 coins in MS64, also with three pieces finer (4/07). This memorable silver dollar is destined for the finest Morgan dollar set, but the bidding should be fierce.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
