1884-S$1> MS63 PCGS. Despite a mintage that was substantially smaller than the earlier S-Mint issues, the production total of more than 3 million coins does not immediately suggest the rarity of this date in Mint State grades. It seems that most of the mintage actually entered circulation near the time they were struck. Pieces that remained in government vaults may have been melted as a result of the Pittman Act of 1918. It seems that additional quantities entered circulation from the 1920s to the 1950s, yet few were saved by collectors. It is doubtful that many or any survived to the Treasury release of the early 1960s. It was not until the 1930s or possibly later that collectors began to recognize the rarity of this issue in Mint State grades, as circulated examples were always available.
This is an amazing example of the conditionally rare 1884-S Morgan dollar. Both sides are fully brilliant with frosty silver luster. Although a few faint hairlines on each side limit the grade of this specimen, it has the first-glance appearance or eye appeal of a coin that grades MS64, or possibly MS65. Both sides are nicely detailed, and the surfaces exhibit the satiny, nearly reflective surfaces that are typical of the earlier San Francisco Mint silver dollars. Although technically a common date due to the existence of many circulated examples, this issue is one of the premier rarities in any and all Mint State grades. Population: 36 in 63, 16 finer (6/06).
