1884-S$1> MS61 PCGS. Something unusual occurred in San Francisco in 1884: Almost the entire mintage of 3.2 million silver dollars produced in that mint was dropped into circulation. With most Morgan dollar issues, large quantities of the original production run were bagged after minting and relegated to storage, many not seeing the light of day again until 1962-64. As a result, few 1884-S dollars were set aside in Uncirculated condition, and it is one of the "Big 5" Morgan dollars for the advanced collector.
The obverse exhibits a semi-prooflike field that, unfortunately, helps accent some scuffiness in the fields on that side. Untoned and brilliant, this coin should fit nicely in an Uncirculated Morgan dollar set. An exceedingly difficult Morgan dollar to locate in any grade of Mint State. Worth a close look and a strong bid.
From The Chicago-Ark Collection.
