1884-S S$1 MS61 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC. The mintage
1884-S$1> MS61 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC. The mintage of this issue was 3.2 million coins, clearly a smaller total than many S-Mint issues of adjacent or nearby coinage dates, yet the mintage hardly suggests the rarity of this issue in Mint State grades. It seems that most of those struck quickly entered the channels of commerce on the West Coast. Today, circulated grade coins, such as VF or XF, are easy to locate and pieces in lower grades are absolutely common. By the late 1930s, this date was recognized as a rarity in Mint State grades. However, during the Treasury release of the 1960s, no one knew if this date would become common, or remain rare. As the value of many rare dates fell drastically, the price of this issue remained steady.
Although a few prooflike examples are known, Dave Bowers called Deep Mirror Prooflike examples of this date "a Holy Grail in the Morgan Series." In fact, this is the only Deep Mirror Prooflike example certified by either PCGS or NGC (7/06). This example is brilliant with light silver surfaces. The design elements are all sharply struck, with a hint of weakness over Liberty's ear. The fields are obviously abraded but not severely so. This is an impressive 1884-S for the advanced specialist.
